So this is part 1 of my rankings for the movies I saw in 2024. While I only saw 23 movies in 2023, in 2024 I saw at least 32 movies. Too my surprise, I saw more “bad” movies then I expected, just enough to make my own version of a “worst” list. Because I don’t hate all of these movies and I think quite a few of them aren’t as bad as people say, this list is divided into 4 categories; lackluster, disappointing, dumb, and sucks. Before anything else, just a quick reminder that I have chosen not to review or rank the films Mary & Dune: Part Two due to my conflicting feelings on them. So you won’t see either of those 2 on this list or the “best” list. If there’s a bad movie you were expecting to see on this list that you didn’t see, check out my “Movies You Won’t See” post through the link down below.
First Category: Lackluster- These are the movies that weren’t really bad, just wasn’t as good as they could’ve and probably should’ve been
#10: Despicable Me 4
The thing about Despicable Me 4 is that I didn’t completely hate it, but it was obvious how much the writing had deteriorated. The Despicable Me Franchise has never really been known for strong and complex writing, it has always been somewhat mindless family fun with a heartwarming moment every now and then. I didn’t expect this to be a strong movie (especially considering that this is the fourth film), but the joy of the franchise just feels watered down and cheeped out at this point. This is why I suggested that if a fifth film is being developed, make it the last. But again, it’s still Despicable Me, it was still funny and I did have a good time watching this. For that reason, it is last place and possibly the best movie on this list. But that’s not saying much.

#9: Trigger Warning
What keeps Trigger Warning from being completely terrible was the fight scenes. They were actually pretty good, and well choreographed. But unfortunately, they were wasted on such a bland and uninspiring movie. I already mentioned that Jessica Alba is a bland actress with very little range. She has a little, but just barely. My least favorite thing about the movie is the villain’s defeat. Easily the dumbest death from last year, even dumber than Divorce In The Black (which says a lot). I guess Alba was attempting to make a girl version of John Wick, and she failed miserably. Honestly, this probably would have succeeded if the film had better writing. Because once again, the fight scenes were great but wasted in a lackluster movie. This probably should’ve been lower than Despicable Me, but it is the way it is.

#8: Back To Black
I’m not really a huge fan of Amy Winehouse nor do I think she needed a biopic. But since Hollywood insisted, I will say she probably deserved better than this. The movie wasn’t the worst, but it was very anti-climatic. There was just a little bit of overacting on the lead’s part, but she wasn’t straight up bad. She just tried a little too hard during the music sequences. The main issue was the movie’s ending. It simply showed Winehouse going upstairs and just ended. It was almost like the movie stopped caring and left it unfinished. It could’ve at least shown a news report or the reactions of her loved ones (notably her father). But it didn’t, it just ended. So yeah. The music sequences were good, which I mentioned in the original review. But other than that, I would expect a movie about one of the 21st century’s most respected artists to be way better than this. But this is what we got instead.

#7: Bob Marley: One Love
From one biopic to another. This was such a strange year for biopics. Bob Marley also deserved better than what he got. This movie wasn’t completely bad as I did mention in the original review that those in the Rastafarian faith will appreciate this film and probably feel very proud of their heritage. But the movie did a very poor job at explaining Marley and his Caucasian father’s relationship. The acting and the music sequences were pretty good, which keeps the movie from sucking. Honestly, the reason it’s at the tail end of the “Lackluster” category is because the previous 3 movies were just better (but not by that much). Marley is another artist deeply respected, so I expected a better biopic than the final results.

Next Category: Disappointing- There’s only 1 movie in this category. This is a movie that I was looking forward to but I was left deeply unsatisfied. And I think a lot of people will agree on this one
#6: Joker: Folie à Deux
Gaga actually had 2 big collaborations this year; one in the movie world and one in the music world. As you probably saw in part 1 of my “Music Of 2024” list, her music collaboration went pretty darn good. Her movie collaboration on the other hand crashed and burned. Joker: Folie à Deux was a total punch in the face. So many of the musical numbers were all over the place and the movie couldn't decide whether it was a musical or a court drama (and the genres sure as Hell don’t mix). Harley Quinn was not used to her full potential and was somewhat de-characterized along with the titular character. Of course we have to talk about its stupid ending. It made little to no sense and pretty much disregarded the first movie. So yeah, I was so disappointed with this movie and I’m really sad to see it sink so low.

Next Category: Dumb- These are probably the least intelligent movies I saw in 2024. I while definitely don’t hate them as much as others, I won’t deny their stupidity
#5: Red One
I don’t hate Red One as much as others, but I will admit that sometimes it was kind of stupid. I also didn’t laugh much. I kind of thought this would be at least a laughing riot. There were moments where I chuckled, but not as much as I would’ve liked. My main issue is Kiernan Shipka. No offense to her, but she kind of sucked as the villain. She wasn’t intimidating, she still looks like a child (despite being my age actually, I’m 25), and she came off as cheesy. In other words, she was very lame as the villain. The Rock was being The Rock like always, and Captain America was fine enough. Fun movie for the holidays, no doubt. But there’s also a lot of better movies for Christmas you can watch over this. Hell, one of them just so happened to be on my “Best” list from last year, and another will be on my “Best” list for this year.

#4: Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie
This movie was weird as Hell. At first I thought critics were being over the top about the movie’s lack of quality. Then the live-action sequences started and I realized what I got myself into. I never want to see cyborg Wanda Sykes ever again. It was ridiculous, it was disturbing and it made me wonder what the Hell were the writers even thinking. I really enjoyed meeting Sandy’s family. I thought they were pretty cool and memorable. But as I said in the review, they had a storyline that was never completed. I think they spoke about Sandy coming back home with them, and just left it alone. It never had a resolution or anything at all. So even with the best part of the movie, the writers still manage to mess it up. Real shame.

#3: Mea Culpa
The worst thing about Mea Culpa was that it thought it was thrilling and sexy when in actuality, it was lame. Every time it tried to be thrilling, the result was underwhelming and the real thrills didn’t even happen until too late into the movie. Its attempts at being sexy were just stupid and cheesy. There was a lot of paint involved and I guess Tyler Perry thought it was creative when it was just a mess (figuratively and literally). Honestly in terms of being sexy, it should’ve taken lessons from Hit Man. The only good thing about this movie is that it’s surprisingly better than Divorce In The Black (which you will see later on this list). With that being said, that’s only by a grain of salt. This is 1 of 3 films Perry released in 2024. I think I’ve made it pretty clear that Perry sucks at his job, that is except with The Six Triple Eight.

Last Category: SUCKS!- Pretty self-explanatory. Only 2 movies for this category
#2: Madame Web
Is it really a surprise that Madame Web is on this list, and high too? The fact that it was more than obvious in and outside of the movie that the actors wanted nothing to do with this and were only doing this to get their paycheck (which honestly I respect ) says a lot about the pure trash this movie really is. The acting sucked, the writing was atrocious, and we do not care at all about these characters. Not to mention, the 3 girls never even got bit or fully became their alter egos in the movie as if Sony believes that their story is worth another movie. IT ISN’T! Which Sony learned the hard way through Kraven’s failure (which I did not see). So yeah, Madame Web absolutely sucks, honestly I think I might’ve lost some brain cells watching it. But, as bad as it is, there’s still one more movie that surprisingly out-ranks it.
Original Review: https://naesnotlikeyou.blogspot.com/2024/02/well-that-sucked.html
Before I reveal my worst for 2024, here are some movies that aren't good or bad. Just okay.................................
Moana 2 Mean Girls
-Mediocre - Fine enough, but not the original
Kung Fu Panda 4
-This breaks my heart 😔
#1: Divorce In The Black
I’m pretty sure I lost even more brain cells watching this hot mess. I was originally going to avoid this movie, but unfortunately my curiosity got the best of me. This movie was so dumb and so lame to the point where it physically hurt just watching it. I COULD NOT STAND the dialogue, the acting was wooden (Good’s acting especially), and the final resolution was SO STUPID that it made Madame Web look like a masterpiece. Only Tyler Perry can do something that bad. You also have to be that bad at your job to get not 1 but 2 of your movies on a “worst” list. This movie really, REALLY SUCKED!!!! It also makes me wonder How The Hell he actually did a decent job with The Six Triple Eight, but absolutely crashed with this and Mea Culpa. It boggles my mind. But yeah, Divorce In The Black was awful and is without a doubt the worst movie I've seen in 2024.
