Top 10 Songs About Magic

Magic and stuff isn’t really my thing. Depending on the context I will listen to music or watch TV shows involving it, unless it goes overboard. I’ve noticed there are a lot of songs that either involve this topic or use it as some type of allegory. And Halloween’s around the corner so I figured now would be a good time to release this list.

#10: Magic Carpet Ride- Steppenwolf

I’m gonna be honest, I was introduced to this song through the Wizards Of Waverly Place movie. There was a cover version from a group by the name of KSM featured in the film. I have heard the original version though, and I probably prefer the cover over the original. Granted you’re not gonna catch me listening to either version on a daily basis, that’s part of the reason why this is the lowest on the list. However, it’s also one of this group’s most notable songs so it wouldn’t be fair for me to not include it on this list as either a selection or an honorable mention. Side Note: did not realize this was the same group behind Born To Be Wild.

#9: Strange Magic- Electric Light Orchestra

This is another song I was introduced to through a cover. This one was featured in the very beginning of Ella Enchanted. While this is also not a song I listen to on a daily basis, I will find myself singing or humming along to it whenever it is playing (well at least the Ella Enchanted version anyway). As you can probably tell, this is another case where I prefer a cover version to the original. In my defense, Ella Enchanted is AWESOME and the film’s rendition of Strange Magic is very pleasant to listen to. The harmonies are gorgeous and extremely catchy. So that’s pretty much why this is just barely higher than Magic Carpet Ride (aside from being one of Electric Light Orchestra’s most notable songs).

#8: Magic- Olivia Newton-John

And here we have yet another song I was introduced to through a cover and through Disney. Meaghan Martin (AKA: Tess Tyler from Camp Rock) did a cover for Wizards. This is however the first track on this list where I don’t like the cover more than the original track. I have seen Xanadu, quite a few times. Obviously this is how I heard the original version. The song is relatively nostalgic, I’ll give it that. But overall I don’t think much of it. But again like the previous two songs. It’s mainly on this list because it is a notable song in its respective artist’s library. I don’t think it would be fair to not include it on the list despite not caring for the song.

#7: 24K Magic- Bruno Mars

Put Your Pinky Rings Up To The MOON! That’s probably my favorite lyric on this track. Actually this song has several lyrics I find catchy as HELL! Like most of Bruno’s library, this song is an absolute BOP. While there are definitely several that I like more than this, that doesn’t mean I won’t smile whenever I hear this play. This is just one of those songs that you can’t help but smile at or dance to. Yes it sometimes does feel like a rehash of Uptown Funk, but it’s a rehash done very well. Again, Bruno has better songs, but I don’t think I will ever get sick of listening to this. I apologize if I sound a little bit too cheesy by saying this, but the pure joy of this track will definitely make you feel #Blessed! I’ll stop now.

#6: Abracadabra- Steve Miller Band

This is actually the only song on this list that I do not know very well. I listened to it for the very first time recently. This song has a whimsical feel to it as I guess it should considering its name’s sake. So of all the songs on this list, it’s probably the most Halloween-ish out of the bunch. This is also probably the most underrated song on the list as well. And I say that because this is the track I’ve heard the least about aside from semi-recently when it was sampled for Eminem’s Houdini, which to be honest is also a decent contender for this list. But honestly I did find this song to be a relatively decent listen. Just not on a daily basis.

#5: Superstition- Stevie Wonder

I love this song. It’s one of Stevie’s best, which says a lot considering it’s FREAKIN Stevie Wonder. He hit the jackpot with that ICONIC medley. If you don’t know that medley you’ve been living under a rock. It’s catchy as HELL and instantly identifiable. And unlike most of the songs on this list, I actually listen to this A LOT! This is probably the song on this list that I listen to the most. So why is it not #1? Because as iconic as it is and as much as I love this song, the rest of the selections are in my humble opinion more iconic in terms of a magic-theme. But if this list was simply a worst to best list or if these selections were ranked based on cultural influence alone, this would undeniably top the list.

#4: Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo- Cinderella

Another song on this list that everybody definitely knows. Probably the most light-hearted song on this list, Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo is just one of many things that makes Cinderella iconic as Hell. Cinderella’s dress transformation will forever be one the most important moments in animation and film history. Most of that is because of this song as well as the phrase itself. Just the phrase Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo alone in my opinion is unique for its time and perfectly captures the wonder of Cinderella’s magical transformation. I think that’s part of the reason why the song stands the test of time and remains influential. No matter how old you get, Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo is forever ingrained into our childhoods.

#3: I Put A Spell On You- Screamin' Jay" Hawkins

Yet another song I was introduced to through a cover from Disney. And if I’m gonna be honest, possibly most people from my generation were introduced to this song through Disney. Obviously I’m referring to Bette Midler’s rendition in Hocus Pocus. Aside from Midler’s, I’ve heard a few covers of this song. Probably the one I remember the most next to Hocus Pocus is Nina Simone’s cover. This is one of those songs where if you ever decide to cover it, you gotta give everything you’ve got. The vocal chops to pull it off are also a REQUIREMENT for this song. If you know you do not have the voice to pull this song off, do not sing it. I Repeat: DO NOT SING IT if you know you can not do it justice. Can’t stress that enough.

#2: Magic- Pilot
I think it’s safe to say a good majority of people know this track. Whether it’s through the original, Selena Gomez’s cover (for 2000s kids anyway), or that stupid Ozempic commercial, this song definitely stood the test of time despite being a one-hit wonder. I’ve known this song for as long as I can remember, and If I’m gonna be honest I’m relatively fond of this song. And It’s not because of Selena Gomez. I find the song strangely pleasant to listen to. You won’t see me listen on a daily basis, but If It plays spontaneously, chances are I will not skip it or I will at least sing along to it. This and my #1 are pretty much neck-and-neck in terms of which song has a bigger influence in my opinion. But for today, Magic is #2.

Like always, here are some honorable mentions.................................

Black Magic- Little Mix   The Family Madrigal- Encanto
-Cute enough track                                                              -They don't talk about Bruno

Love Potion #9- Various   Abracadabra- Lady Gaga
-No comment                                                                    -Are You Happy Now Little Monsters?!😒

 Houdini- Dua Lipa
-Catchy song

#1: Do You Believe In Magic- The Lovin' Spoonful

This is one of those songs that has been covered WAY too many times, which is part of the reason why I gave this the top spot. I've heard so many renditions of this song I’m shocked that no one has gotten tired of it. Like many 2000s kids, the version I remember the most is Aly & AJ’s rendition (another cover from Disney Channel). I do enjoy their cover mainly because it is nostalgic and immediately brings me back to my childhood. Pretty much all the versions are happy and joyful, which is part of its charm and probably why it remains loved even 61 years later. Is this overcovered in my opinion; Yes. Is that EXTREMELY annoying; Oh Yeah! But there’s a reason why this song is often revisited and I strangely respect that.

Last Minute Music Reviews

So here are some last minute reviews of songs that I've heard over the past few months that did not reach #1;   Where Is My Husband - Raye This is incredibly fun and strangely catchy. While this is not officially a jazz song, this obviously has jazz influence and it works very well for this song. I will go ahead and admit that this is my introduction to Raya, I have not listened to Oscar Winning Tears . So far, I'm intrigued.    Midnight Sun - Zara Larsson This song is kind of AWESOME. Not only is the production GORGEOUS, but it also has a very nice hook that goes smoothly with Larsson's voice. My sister actually recommended this song to me and I see why. Larsson does currently have a Grammy nomination for this. She's gonna lose, but I'm glad this song got recognized. If my sister see's this, thank you.   How It's Done - Huntrix (From KPop Demon Hunters ) I have been meaning to review this for a while, but I kept getting lazy. Like Golden , this song has g...

So.......The Bride😕

So I was completely off-track with The Bride . Did not expect the film to crash and burn as hard as it did with both critics AND the box-office. After getting murdered, a woman by the name of Ida is brought back to life with the intention of being a companion to the oh-so iconic Frankenstein. And together they wreck havoc. Like Wuthering Heights , the movie wasn't terrible but it had a lot of problems. The biggest issue with this film is that it tries way too hard to be edgy and it just doesn't work. It wanted to be this hardcore feminist take on Frankenstein , but it just felt convoluted and slightly underwritten. It had this plotline involving Ida causing some revolution for women and did pretty much nothing with it until the last minute. It was kind of a let down. The best thing about the movie however was the performances and chemistry between Buckley and Christian Bale. I thought they were strangely endearing, and this might be a better love story than Wuthering Heights  (...
