For some reason DreamWorks likes to be up and down. They're capable of releasing gorgeous films like The Wild Robot, but also release nonsense like Gabby's Play House. Their latest release centers on Filipino BFFs Jo and Raisa, the latter of which reveals she's heading to the US for college. The duo suddenly find themselves on the forgotten island of Nakali.
This movie was fantastic. It is so over-the-top in all the best ways possible. This is the perfect example of representation done properly. It's not trying too hard nor is it overly reliant on these characters being women of color. These girls (Jo especially) are extremely relatable and likable. Jo's struggles such as dealing with change, abandonment issues, feeling like she doesn't matter in the world, etc. is something many of us can relate to. The girls appeal to spectators in a universal way and don't feel forced at all.
It introduces the audience to Philippine mythology in a fun, playful and vibrant way. It worked perfectly with that type of animation (Spider-Verse animation🥰). And even though it's a kids movie, this movie got to some dark and creepy territory, and there were definitely some adult jokes in there.
The side characters, Raw in particular, were also fun and memorable without trying to hard or over-selling it. I liked Bungi, Batiba was.....interesting, and the Manananggal gave me the creeps.
Extremely good movie. Very Impressed. Thanks For Reading.
