Top 10 Onscreen Single Mothers

With Mother’s Day obviously being tomorrow, I figured now would be a good time to release this list. This is a list of movie and tv moms who are single parents. They have to be single from the very start and not later in the project. If they are no longer single by the end of the project, that is completely fine. Both live-action and animated characters will be included on this list. Single fathers will be receiving their own list next month.

#10: Rachel Flax- Mermaids

Look I’m gonna be honest, I have never seen this movie and I do not care enough to see it. If my exploration of it comes off shaky, I apologize. So Cher plays Rachel Flax, a single mom who acts more like a friend than a parent, much to the embarrassment of her oldest daughter Charlotte (whose actress may or may not make an appearance later on this list). One example of Rachel’s irresponsibility is her moving her family every time she goes through a break-up. I probably shouldn’t be too hard on Rachel as Charlotte is the product of a teenage pregnancy. Though at the same time, you’d think she’d mature by her 30s. Again, I have not seen this movie, so I do not have much to say about the character aside from this. I wish I could add more, but this is all that I’ve got. Moving on.

#9: Carey Martin- The Suite Life Series

I honestly don’t know how Carey puts up with her sons’ constant shenanigans and stupidity. Literally every time she turns around, Zach and Cody are wreaking havoc pretty much everywhere they go. The twins are so terrible that Carey visibly expressed relief when her ex-husband offered to have them stay at his place. At least her and Cody have a bond, Zach on the other hand just straight up ignores her. Though he definitely does care for her, which is evident in small moments like in the pilot episode of Suite Life On Deck when they were saying goodbye as the SS Tipton departed. Carey actually reminds me A LOT of my own mother due to both being no nonsense but caring with their kids. I’ll also give Carey a quick little shout out for being a caring figure towards other kids such as Maddie and London.

#8: Donna Sheridan- Mamma Mia!

So I actually have seen Mamma Mia! And because I’m not the biggest fan of ABBA I have mixed feelings for the movie. Though I would be lying If I said I didn’t like at least a few of the songs from the musical. Both the movie and the musical center on Amanda Seyfried’s Sophie contacting 3 men whom she believes might be her father. Her single mother Donna (portrayed by the oh-so iconic Meryl Streep) is unaware of this. There’s nothing but love between Donna and Sophie, with one of the sweetest moments of both movies being Sophie asking her mom to give her away at the wedding, which says a lot considering she contacted her possible fathers in hopes that one would give her away. Donna is no longer a single parent by the end of the first movie as she marries Pierce Brosnan, and is no longer alive by the time we get to the second movie.

#7: Malory Archer- Archer

I said this list centers on single mothers, I never said they had to be good mothers. Otherwise, Malory would not be on this list at all. The head of ISIS, Malory is very self-centered and uncaring towards pretty much everyone around her, including her son (who’s also a piece of trash). Archer was in a strange situation considering it’s one thing to dislike your boss, but it’s another thing for your suck-ish boss to also be your mother. Granted, I do believe she cares for him considering she stayed at the hospital with him when he fell into a coma. So clearly there’s some type of love whether she wants to admit it or not. Malory is also probably the most dirty-minded character on this list. Her time on the show ends with her turning the agency over to her son and flying off to the sunset with Ron due to the passing of her voice actress (who played another douchebag mom on Arrested Development).

#6: Ashley Marin- Pretty Little Liars

I hate Pretty Little Liars with a burning passion. In fact the main reason I’m aware of some plot information is because my sister watched it at some point and even read the books (I don’t know if she read all of them). But this isn’t about my hatred for this show, it’s about the relationship dynamic between our current subject and her child. Ashley Marin serves as the mom to Hanna and became a single parent when her husband cheated and left her for the mistress. Ashley and Hanna are pretty loyal to each other, which is best showcased in the Detective Wilden situation. Ashley sleeps with him so her daughter isn’t charged for shoplifting, and when Ashley’s framed for his murder by A, Hanna wants to turn herself in to keep Ashley from going to prison. If that does not spell “loyalty” then I don’t know what will.

#5: Joyce Summers- Buffy The Vampire Slayer

To be honest, I’m kind of conflicted on if I should even put Joyce this high on the list. For the very few of you who may not know, Joyce is the mother of everyone’s favorite vampire slayer Buffy along with her younger sister Dawn. She’s a single parent by the start of the series having recently divorced from her husband Hank. The reason why I’ve been skeptical over her placement is because the most memorable thing about Joyce is her death. I don’t think anyone would really remember anything in particular about Joyce aside from being Buffy’s mom if it wasn’t for the simplistic manner of her death within this type of show. If she’s memorable mainly for her end alone and not for any personality traits or usefulness throughout the show, then I probably shouldn't have put her this high. But then again I’m not a fan of the show, so I would not be surprised at all if I’m wrong.

#4: ROZZUM "Roz" unit 7134- The Wild Robot

Roz was actually placed on this list at the last minute due to me realizing her qualifications (almost) too late. After accidentally killing a mama goose and all but one of her eggs, Roz is given the “task” of raising the sole surviving child. We witness Roz’s INCREDIBLE journey as she grows as a mom, a friend and a hero. She brings an entire forest together with her kindness alone and succeeds in teaching her “runt of the litter” son how to fly. Roz’s journey perfectly showcased the complexities and hardships of raising a child and it was beautiful (and heartbreaking) to watch. If I had released my “Cartoon Movie Moms” list around the time Wild Robot was released, I would’ve gladly placed her very high on the list. Definitely not #1, but still in a high spot. I cannot believe I almost forgot to put her on the list. SHAME ON ME!

#3: Mrs. Brisby- The Secret Of Nimh

If anyone remembers, Mrs. Brisby actually did make an appearance on my “Cartoon Movie Moms” list, and she was given a high spot on that list as well. The widowed Mrs. Brisby is raising 4 children on her own and falls into a dilemma when one of them becomes ill. In an effort to relocate her family, Mrs. Brisby goes on a quest to find the Rats Of Nimh. Mrs. Brisby is probably one of the most underrated characters here on this list. Her determination purely for the sake of her kids is incredibly sweet and admirable. As great as Roz is, Mrs. Brisby came first and I personally think she had more against her than Roz. This makes her even more inspiring as both a character  and a mother in my humble opinion. Plus, she gets extra points for powering an amulet with her determination alone. So of course that will get her a higher spot than the only other 2 cartoon characters on this list and a high spot on the list overall.

#2: Joyce Byers- Stranger Things

Joyce Byers is another example of fierce motherhood as she has showcased her devotion as a mom multiple times throughout the show. Obviously the first season of Stranger Things focused on the whereabouts of her younger son Will and we witness her EXTREMELY strong determination in finding him and bringing him home. If that is not one Hell of an example for a mother’s love then I don’t know what is. That determination is the reason why I placed Joyce so high on this list despite making her onscreen debut a little later than most of the characters on this list (#1 included). But her resilience in finding her son being a big part of season one says a lot about how strong she is as a parent. Those reasons alone made Joyce a very strong contender for my #1 spot. But unfortunately my next pick’s dynamic with her daughter is more iconic. Regardless, Joyce LOVES her baby.

Before I reveal my top pick, here are some honorable mentions.....................................

Lora Meredith- Imitation Of Life          Bonnie Plunkett- Mom
-Probably the oldest existing character here                                    -She's a moron, but love her

Monkey/Sariatu- Kubo                          Liane Cartman- South Park
-Also a "Cartoon Movie Moms" selection                               -(SIGH)🤦🏾‍♀️

Mrs. Jumbo- Dumbo                            Mrs. Potts- Beauty & The Beast
-Baby Mine😭😭😭                                                                    -Another "Cartoon Movie Moms" selection

 Annie Hughes- The Iron Giant
-Yet another "Cartoon Movie Moms" selection

#1: Lorelai Gilmore- Gilmore Girls
Of course I was gonna give Lorelai the top spot, and I’m not even a fan of Gilmore Girls. The ENTIRE series stands on the relationship between Lorelai and her daughter Rory, whom she had when she was 16. The 2 are incredibly close, and one thing I just noticed is that Lorelai slightly contrasts Rachel. Both characters went through a teenage pregnancy, but while Rachel's small age gap between her and her daughter seemed to be somewhat of a disadvantage due to her lack of maturity at the beginning of the movie, Lorelai’s small age gap with Rory appeared to be more of an advantage for them. And at least Lorelai has maturity. So yeah, Lorelai was an easy and obvious pick for my #1 and is probably one of the most iconic moms in television history (in my humble opinion that is).

With the Top 20 Officially decided, the time has come for my annual Idol rankings and commentaries. Quick little explanation; I will be saying my thoughts on the contestants and their performances. I present to you our Top 20;   Philmon Lee                                                        Madison Moon  Braden Rumfelt                    Jake Thistle  Jesse Findling                          Jordan McCullough (Platinum)  Ruby Rae                   ...

So.......The Bride😕

So I was completely off-track with The Bride . Did not expect the film to crash and burn as hard as it did with both critics AND the box-office. After getting murdered, a woman by the name of Ida is brought back to life with the intention of being a companion to the oh-so iconic Frankenstein. And together they wreck havoc. Like Wuthering Heights , the movie wasn't terrible but it had a lot of problems. The biggest issue with this film is that it tries way too hard to be edgy and it just doesn't work. It wanted to be this hardcore feminist take on Frankenstein , but it just felt convoluted and slightly underwritten. It had this plotline involving Ida causing some revolution for women and did pretty much nothing with it until the last minute. It was kind of a let down. The best thing about the movie however was the performances and chemistry between Buckley and Christian Bale. I thought they were strangely endearing, and this might be a better love story than Wuthering Heights  (...

Last Minute Music Reviews

So here are some last minute reviews of songs that I've heard over the past few months that did not reach #1;   Where Is My Husband - Raye This is incredibly fun and strangely catchy. While this is not officially a jazz song, this obviously has jazz influence and it works very well for this song. I will go ahead and admit that this is my introduction to Raya, I have not listened to Oscar Winning Tears . So far, I'm intrigued.    Midnight Sun - Zara Larsson This song is kind of AWESOME. Not only is the production GORGEOUS, but it also has a very nice hook that goes smoothly with Larsson's voice. My sister actually recommended this song to me and I see why. Larsson does currently have a Grammy nomination for this. She's gonna lose, but I'm glad this song got recognized. If my sister see's this, thank you.   How It's Done - Huntrix (From KPop Demon Hunters ) I have been meaning to review this for a while, but I kept getting lazy. Like Golden , this song has g...
