I think Smashing Machine slowly but surely lost its spark after its Rotten Tomatoes was revealed. Despite supposedly receiving a standing ovation, both critics and the box-office are shown to not be as excited. In the film, The Rock portrays Mark Kerr, a now retired wrestler/mixed martial artist.
The problem with this movie is that it has the elements to be amazing, but it did not use them to its advance. The film waited too long to elevate things to the next level. And even when it did, nothing was done with it in the aftermath. The movie relied a little too much on style, The Rock, and Emily Blunt (more on them later). This did not completely destroy the movie, it just did not take advantage of its elements, at all.
Another issue I had with the movie was that I'm unsure what aspect of Kerr's life it was focusing on. First, I though It focused on his relationship with Dawn, then I thought it was on him and Coleman's friendship, then his drug addiction. Maybe the film was trying to balance out those aspects. But if that's the case, it did not do the greatest job. The film wasn't completely convoluted, I just was not sure what was the main aspect of Kerr's story (aside from wrestling of course).
The Rock did not blow me away, but he did do better than he probably should have. If he actually does do more drama roles after this, then I do believe he can become stronger. Blunt was amazing, but that's not really much of a surprise. She couldn't do a bad performance even if she tried.
The movie was not bad at all, but it probably should've been better. Thanks For Reading.
