So here we have our my second double review of the year. I saw Roofman 2 weeks ago, and it centers on the true story of Jeffrey Manchester; A struggling army vet who broke out of prison and took refuge in a Toys R Us store of all places. I watched Highest 2 Lowest with my family a week later, and it centers on a music mogul who finds himself in a difficult situation when his son and his friend are kidnapped.
Roofman
Roofman in my opinion was surprisingly more sad than funny. It did have funny moments, but the drama aspect was incredibly strong. Not that I am complaining, I actually respect the movie for not shying away from the tragedy of Mr. Manchester's life. Ironically, It achieved what Straw was trying to do with Henson's character. While Straw was trying too hard to make people feel sorry for her, Roofman was natural and let the story speak for itself. Also, this was Channing Tatum's best performance. He did not blow me away, but I also did not think he had any drama chops in him. Well done ππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎ
Highest 2 Lowest
I personally was slightly underwhelmed by this movie and expected this to be better than it was. But regardless, the film was not necessarily bad. It did have its thrilling moments and Denzel pretty much held this film together. The movie was at its strongest when it focused on the difficult position of Denzel's character in terms of what to do with the ransom. You understand how complicated this is for him, but you also see him as cold blooded. However there were some scenes that were slightly long-winded and the movie's biggest flaw is the score. It was way too overdramatic and did not fit the film at all.
