The first trailer for this movie will catch you off guard. At first it'll look like this fun little road trip movie. Then Roman Griffin Davis gets shot and all of a sudden you're in another version of the Hunger Games. Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, this movie centers on a group of young boys in a dystopian America who participate in this event where you walk until there is 1 person left. If you stop walking or slow down for even 2 seconds, you will be shot. The grand prize of course is money, and a wish.
Stephen Edwin King, What The Hell Did These Poor Boys Ever Do To You?! This movie was GORGEOUS but SAD as HELL!!!!!!!!!! It wasted no time getting into the brutality of this messed up event. Those boys couldn't sleep, couldn't stop to tie their shoe, they weren't even allowed to use the bathroom without walking. This game got brutal, disturbing, and gross. And these are CHILDREN we're talking about. While they did voluntarily participate in the game, this is a really good example of how desperation or any negative emotion (such as vengeance) can get dangerous. It can lead to regretful decisions and these boys definitely felt that during this movie. I don't think these deaths would be as affective if these were adults. The deeper we got into the movie, the more scared and unhinged they became. It was devastating.
Yet even in all of that, those boys (David Jonsson's character especially) still managed to find some joy in this. The friendships created between these characters provided a light in this dark premise. The chemistry between pretty much all the actors (though mainly Jonsson and Hoffman) is incredibly strong and so sweet to watch. Jonsson was pretty much the voice of reason throughout the movie (until the end, watch it yourself), and his positive outlook on life despite having A LOT of good reason to be angry at the world brough me to tears. Him and Hoffman's friendship was extremely poignant, which made the way it ended even more heartbreaking. It was beautiful to witness how much these boys really cared for each other and seeing each one go became even more devastating than the last.
So far, this might be my favorite movie of the year. That could always change, but we'll see what happens. Thanks For Reading
