The internet has been raving about KPop Demon Hunters (or simply Kpop as I normally refer to it for short) for a while now, and the fact that people are talking about this more than Elio (which is currently flopping) is kind of pathetic for Pixar. The 3 ladies you see up top are Huntrix, a Korean girl group who also serve as demon hunters. However there is one small issue; our main protagonist is half demon. Also there's this evil boy band Hell-bent on stealing people's souls.
We'll get to the spiritual part later. The movie as a whole was excellent. Literally almost everything about it was so over-the-top, from the animation style (more on that later also) to the music. This movie went all in on pretty much every one of its aspects. Our 3 main characters were likable and memorable, each in their own way. Even their manager had his memorable moments and the Saja Boys were a WHOLE new level of insane. Also, Rumi and Jinu were very cute. I also admire that the film got dark when it needed to.
Disney now officially needs to take notes from Sony on how to properly use pop music (or Kpop in this case) in musicals. I personally do not connect with the songs (except 2), but I can tell that the writers knew what they were doing with these lyrics. They knew the type of lyrics that stick with audiences, and they clearly understood the characters very well, which is something that the songwriters for Moana 2 desperately needed (seriously, Lin Manuel Miranda was deeply missed from that soundtrack). I did mention that I only connected with 2 songs; being Golden (which is offensively high) and What It Sounds Like.
So, the spiritual part. According to the character Jinu (who's a demon and Rumi's love interest), the film's main antagonist, an evil entity called Gwi-Ma, controls demons by using their shame and insecurities to draw them closer to him (making them do terrible things) and eventually takes their soul. He constantly clouds Jinu's mind with reminders of his mistake. I don't know If I got this correctly, but from a Christian perspective that sounds like spiritual warfare. That's basically what the devil does; clouds your mind with your insecurities, draws you to make dumb decisions and once you do, he makes you feel like you're not good enough for God (or don't need God) and draws your soul away from God. Again, as a Christian that's what I saw personally, and from what it looks like it's a similar case for other Christians who have seen this movie as well. Adding to that; the song Your Idol is very unsettling as the Saja Boys are literally telling fans to worship them, making the song feel like an allegory for celebrity worship. I absolutely do NOT believe that the writers did this on purpose (it's a movie about demons for the love of God), but God most certainly did.
Lastly, I love the animation. Considering this is from the same studio as Spider-Verse (😍), it should come as no surprise that it used the same animation style for this. But probably the strongest thing about the animation is the facial expressions of the characters. They are so ridiculously anime, but it works SO WELL with this type of movie.
This movie did surprise me in many ways. I do encourage you to watch and Christians to not be put off by it. Thanks For Reading.
