This is a list of some of the most notable and heartbreaking deaths that have occurred in films released between the years 2010 and 2019. Animated films are excluded because I made those its own list (which I will debut eventually).
#10: Steve Trevor- Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is without a doubt a BOSS, but that doesn't mean we should underestimate Steve Trevor. This soldier was no pushover on the battlefield and did the best he could to make sure all innocents were protected. He was an extremely likable dude, you'd have to be in order to win over someone as strong as Wonder Woman. So it was sad to see him go but he went out with a bang, sacrificing his life via piloting a plane filled with poisonous gas and bombing it as well as himself so it wouldn't be used for more destruction as it was earlier in the film. Unfortunately, the significance of his death shrank due to the not so great Wonder Woman 1984 bringing him back for stupid reasons. Honestly, that also played a part in Steve getting a low placement on this list.
#9: Lee Abbott- A Quiet Place
In a post-apocalyptic planet Earth, the Abbott family struggle to stay alive in a world infested with blind aliens who basically use their ears as their eyes. Thankfully, due to the teenage daughter Regan being deaf, the family is frequent in ASL. Unfortunately, when 2 of the kids find themselves in trouble, the family's patriarch Lee distracts the alien via screaming, causing it to attack and kill him. His goodbye to his daughter may have been silent, but it was still powerful regardless. As sad as it is, what else do you expect from a father? It's heartbreaking but also heartwarming that he thought of his family until the very end. Adding more insult to injury, this isn't the only loss the Abbott family has experienced as they had already lost the youngest son (before the baby was born) earlier in the film.
#8: Gwen Stacy- The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Shut Up Spider-Gwen I Wasn't Talking About You! This less superior version of Gwen Stacy served as the love interest for Peter Parker. Granted, considering her death is one of the most significant moments in comic book history, it wasn't much of a surprise when she got caught in the middle of a fight between Green Goblin and Peter. The fight ends with her suffering a fatal blow to the head after a fall. With that being said, that didn't make the death any less heartbreaking. Peter's EXTREMELY devastating reaction made this even worse (shoutout to my favorite Peter Andrew Garfield, I Love You Man!). Say what you want about the movie, Marc Webb nailed this scene in my humble opinion.
#7: Severus Snape- Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2
So a lot of people call Snape's death a moment of redemption. But let's be honest, it really isn't because he was never really a bad guy. I'm not even a fan of Harry Potter, and even I know that. Yes the man did kill Dumbledore, but even in that moment he was simply following orders from Dumbledore himself (which in some ways makes it even more depressing). As Snape takes his final breath, through his memories we see the origins of his distaste for Harry as well as Dumbledore's plan. Technically speaking, his hate towards Harry is unfair. But it's not really fair for him to be referred to as a villain either. At the end of the day, he was just bitter, but never a villain. He's a fan favorite for a reason. Dobby was also a contender for this list.
#6: Jackson Maine- A Star Is Born
This was sad as Hell. It's more than obvious from the beginning of the movie that Jackson had some issues, mainly his alcoholism and tinnitus. You'd think Ally would give him a reason to get his life together, and for a short while she did. Then her stupid manager had to stick his nose into their business and things got even more depressing than they already were. While Ally's at a concert, Jackson takes Rez's harsh words to heart, and takes his own life via hanging himself with his belt. Yes Jackson was problematic, but by that point he genuinely tried to be better for Ally and ultimately his inner demons unfortunately got the best of him. No one was more devastated than Ally, who of course finished and recorded I'll Never Love Again in his absence and honor. I hope she fired her manager.
#5: Hans Solo- Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Look, I HATE Star Wars with a burning passion. But I will say that it was pretty gutsy killing off one of the franchise's more iconic characters. Kylo Ren definitely has some daddy issues, otherwise Solo would not be on this list. Being stabbed right through your gut by a lightsaber is not a fun way to go, but imagine getting murdered by your own son. That's messed up on so many levels. This death was so huge that there are a few videos on the internet of fan meltdowns over this character's death. So yeah I consider this death relatively insane. Unfortunately due to the real life death of Carrie Fisher, Star Wars would also lose Princess Leia in Rise Of Skywalker.
#4: Augustus "Gus" Waters- The Fault In Our Stars
The Fault In Our Stars is sad as HELL! I honestly did not think it would make me cry but it did. Most movies about cancer tend to be depressing for obvious reasons. When we meet the oh-so loveable Gus Waters, he was in remission from cancer after losing a leg. He instantly fell head over heels in love upon meeting Hazel. The boy wooed Hazel and us with his kindness, charisma, and just pure likability. Then cancer decides to be a douchebag again and strikes Gus. Accept this time, it's even worse as it is now terminal. We're treated to an incredibly sweet goodbye from Hazel before Gus finally passes on. I'm Not Crying, YOU ARE!ðŸ˜
#3: Rue- The Hunger Games
If you've read the books, then you obviously knew that Rue wasn't gonna make it. But that didn't make her demise any less painful, heartbreaking or unfair. The main reason Katniss was even attached to Rue in the first place was because she reminded her of Prim (who would also lose her life later in the franchise). Katniss is able to comfort Rue in her final moments and memorializes her body with flowers and respect. This also kick-started a riot in District 11 and probably marked the beginning of Katniss' impact and influence over Panam. I think it's safe to say Rue's death stayed with Katniss for a really long time.
#2: Tony Stark/Iron Man- Avengers: Endgame
This death HURT 3000! The MCU literally began with Tony. We watched him grow not only as a hero, but as a person. That arrogant billionaire was long gone by this point. And as sad as it is to see him go, he went out in the best way possible. Given his growth, it was only fitting that he went out saving the world from Thanos, and with his own snap. It hasn't even been a decade since Endgame yet, and Tony's final words have already gone down in history as legendary. While RDJ will eventually return to the MCU with Doomsday (God help his poor soul for being sucked back into this mess), he's still portraying another version of Tony. It doesn't change the fact that OUR Tony is gone. Rest In Peace Iron Man.
Like always, here are some honorable mentions.........................
-I'm Mary Poppins Y'all🥹 -Surprisingly tender moment
-Scarlett died twice in 1 year -First movie to make me cry
-Stay away from clowns kids -That was messed up😳
-Cancer strikes again😒
#1: James "Logan" Howlett/Wolverine- Logan
Like with Tony, Hugh Jackman would also return as Logan for Deadpool & Wolverine. But also like Tony, saying goodbye to Logan was soul-crushing regardless. Logan was ready to die by this point given his entire life has been a living HELL! But he literally fought until the very end. From his bittersweet final moments with Laura, to Laura changing the cross on his grave to an 'X', it was the perfect way to bid farewell to a tragic but loved character. Even with Deadpool & Wolverine, I feel like this death stuck with people even years after Logan was released. This death marked a milestone for both this franchise and the superhero movie genre. It's not only the saddest death of the decade, but also the most iconic.
