The Final Destination franchise is both entertaining and stupid. Stupid because of the premise for the entire franchise (being "Death" going after people when they fail to die) and entertaining because the deaths themselves are no joke. While this movie is the same premise, it does add a little depth to it. Death is still after people who weren't supposed to survive a tragedy, for this case a high-rise restaurant tower that backfired horribly in 1968. But this time it's not just the supposed victims, it's also the families and bloodline of the victims as they were never supposed to exist.
This is the last thing I expected to say about a Final Destination movie, but here we are; this movie was FANTASTIC. This probably marked the first time the franchise tried something a little bit different while still staying true to its signature spirit. Because this is a family we're talking about, this feels a lot more personal and it brings the franchise the heart it often lacks. There was some dysfunction in the family due to the matriarch Iris' paranoia (for honestly good reasons), but they always came together regardless. The dynamic was very strong, particularly between Stefani and Charlie, and Erik and Bobby. One of my main issues with this franchise is that most of its characters are bland, forgettable, unlikable and random (minus this one and the original). While I will admit that's still an issue with this film's characters individually (except probably Erik), it's undermined by the poignant family dynamic.
One of my favorite highlights of this movie is what it did William Bludworth. It actually provided a clever incite on the character's background and it made sense why he had so much knowledge about death. I also obviously have to acknowledge that this was Tony Todd's last movie before he passed, and his soul scene in the film was a perfect and fitting way of putting this character to rest. It was obvious how sick Mr. Todd was at that point and that he knew the end was near. This scene almost made me cry, which was the LAST thing I expected from this movie 😐! The point is, there was no better way to say goodbye to both Bludworth and Mr. Todd. Rest In Peace✌🏾
The deaths were AWESOME! And disturbing, but mostly awesome. This is probably the most creative I've seen the franchise be with these deaths. This was also probably the most brutal too, which says A LOT considering Final Destination is always brutal with the deaths. But this movie took the franchise's usual brutality and elevated it times 100. It was THAT insane.
I was so sure that this would get mixed or negative reviews, and now it's the most acclaimed film of the franchise and one of my favorite films of the year so far. What a surprise. Thanks For Reading.
