Top 10 Best Songs Of 2024: Secular

So I present to you, part 1 of 2024 music. I originally was not going to give the categories their own post. But considering I’m planning on doing 2 lists for the movies, it’s only fair that I do the same for music. Though in this case, it will be in the form of dividing secular and worship music instead of a “worst” list. Secular is obviously first and worship will be up later this month.

#10: Good Luck Babe- Chappel Roan

So this might be slightly controversial due to this not being higher. But at the end of the day it's my list. As I mentioned in the original review, I like the retro vibe you get from this song as it sounds like the type of song you'd probably hear during the 80's (minus the subject matter probably). Speaking of which, I did not say this in the original review but I'm relatively nonchalant with its themes. It's not a negative or a highlight for me, it's just there. The main reason this is so low is because I don't connect with the melody as much as others on this list. But that doesn't take away from the song at all. It's a very appealing and fun song, just not my favorite and I don't speak of it as highly as others.

#9: A Bar Song (Tipsy) - Shaboozey

You know how almost every year there's that one song that's overplayed and overhyped to the point where it's really annoying, but you still can't help but like it due to it being so dang catchy; that's my situation with this song. It is so overhyped that it genuinely irritates me that it's too catchy for me to completely hate it. The lyric Here Comes The 2 To The 3 To The 4 is forever locked in my brain, whether I want it to or not. This is also an incredibly fun song, probably one of the most fun I've listened to all last year. Is it overhyped, oh yeah. But do I also understand the hype, yes I do. I know I keep saying that, but you can't deny that it is played a lot. Not to mention, it currently has a Song Of The Year nomination at the Grammys for a reason. It's overhyped, but I get it.

#8: Apt.- Rosé & Bruno Mars

This song is fun as Hell. I didn't think I would like it, but I understand the appeal of it. I mentioned in the original review that the way it's arranged is incredibly effective and I think one of the reasons for that is because despite having familiar lyrics, they work very well with the melody to the point where it's extremely catchy. It probably wouldn't have worked if different artists were involved, which is an example of how well Mars and Rosé work together. I also like that this song is loaded with another culture. I mentioned in the original review that taking inspiration from a Korean drinking game is strangely creative. I guess we all now know just a little bit more about Korea now. By the way, we will see Bruno Mars appear once again later on this list.

#7: Beautiful Things- Benson Boone

This one is also rather controversial as I've already seen this one on some "worst" lists and this is higher than a song that would most likely be higher on other people's list, Good Luck Babe. But once again, this is my list. I like what I like and I really like this song. I think what mainly draws me to the song is the melody on the chorus. As long as I like the melody, I'm good. And I understand if Boone's vocals are sketchy. But at the same time, I'm just impressed at how high his vocal range is.  I won't deny that he should be careful not to rely too much on it though. And lastly (as I did mention in the original review), I'm just happy that another American Idol alumni was actually able to make it, which is rare nowadays.

#6: Lose Control- Teddy Swims

This song has really grown on me since the first time I listened to it. Not to mention, this is also a favorite of my dad's. I LOVE Swims' vocals on this. I'm a sucker for runs (which I often refer to as "pulling a Whitney"), and his signature run when he sings Control is kind of awesome and easily the best part of the song. And as I mentioned in my original review, it goes well with the torch feel of this song. It's also relatively soulful for a secular song. This song probably has the second best vocals on this list (we'll speak on the first later). For me personally, there’s not a lot of flaws I can point out, the rest of the tracks on this list are just better than this. I wish I had more to say about this song, but this is all I can think of. Nice song, great vocals, personal favorite of last year. Moving on.

#5: Like That- Future, Metro Boomin, & Kendrick Lamar

I've got a lot of explaining to do on this song. My original review was rather negative. Then I forgot that I already reviewed it and posted another more positive review of the song in the "Random Music Reviews" post. I was so embarrassed about my mistake that I deleted the section for this song  on "Random Music Reviews" despite the fact that it had already been made public. My apologies for that. But with that being said, this song has grown on me a lot and Lamar is without a doubt the standout. Not because he dissed Drake (though that definitely helps), but because his bars are on point. And the fact that he changed his rhythm on his verse multiple times without losing his mojo is remarkable. The others were good too. But let's be honest, we love this song for Lamar (who will make another appearance on this list).

#4: Hiss- Megan Thee Stallion

Continuing on diss tracks, Megan Thee Stallion obviously had something to say about Nicki Minaj. I think it's safe to say you do not want to piss her off. Megan absolutely nailed her delivery on this track. Not only were her bars on point, but it's obvious that she meant every word on that track and the fire behind the lyrics just added even more power to the song. I also like the production of this and the beat might be one of my favorites from last year. This song has really grown on me since the first time I listened to it. It probably shouldn't have, considering I have relatively mixed feelings towards Megan Thee Stallion (this is also probably the most foul-mouthed song on this list). But again, I like what I like (which is not always a good thing).

#3: Die With A Smile- Bruno Mars & Lady Gaga

Like a majority of these songs, Die With A Smile grew on me within the short time between now and when I first listened to it. Pretty much all of what I said about it in the original review still stands now. The chemistry between Mars and Gaga is very strong and they did a very good job at making relatively familiar lyrics still have life in them. I mentioned earlier that Teddy Swims probably had the second best vocal performance on this list, Mars and Gaga have the first. The song just works in different ways that it probably shouldn’t and that for me makes it stand out. I think one of the reasons for that is because I expected this to be one of those songs that I just find overrated and portrayed by the media as way better than it actually is. But it really is worthwhile and I enjoy this track very much.

#2: Not Like Us- Kendrick Lamar

This song has grown on me the most out of the others. I initially said that I didn’t really care for the song, and now I take it back. The fact that the A Minor lyric is so ice cold that it has several reaction compilation videos on YouTube to that lyric alone says a lot. It is easily the best lyric of the song, and the best lyric of 2024. This track has the best lyrics of 2024 period, as it didn’t take very long for OV Ho  to become a classic. What makes this song even better is Drake’s immature and pathetic response to its success. Quick shout out to my sister, who was easily Lamar’s biggest fan last year. She was the one who got me into this song and if she sees this post, thank you. I admit, I feel really bad that I didn’t give it the top spot. Of course that doesn’t take away from this song at all, I just liked the next one a little bit more.

Original Review: https://naesnotlikeyou.blogspot.com/2024/05/more-billboard_20.html

And before I reveal what that song is, here are some honorable mentions................

Espresso- Sabrina Carpenter                 Yes, And- Ariana Grande
Fight Me Later                                                                                                 Popular doesn't count

Million Dollar Baby- Tommy Richman    Stargazing- Myles Smith
It's catchy, I admit it                                                                                         Kind of nostalgic for me

#1: Too Sweet- Hozier

Hozier is the artist behind Take Me To Church, which is a song I personally take issue with. This is the only other one of his songs I’ve heard, and it’s kind of fantastic. Like with most songs I like, the melody (which is persistent the entire track) is incredibly smooth. It probably works because of that bass, which in my opinion makes the song and would be nothing without it. I originally said it was nothing special, but the more I listen to the song, the more infectious it becomes. Of all the songs from last year I’ve listened to, this is the one that remained consistent as a standout (ironically from an artist I dislike). This is also probably the one I’ve listened to on repeat the most. While Not Like Us without a doubt has the best lyrics of 2024, it comes down to the melody with me (as I’ve mentioned multiple times). Underwhelming #1, but I don’t care.

American Idol  has officially reached its live shows so that means it's time to start the commentaries. For those of you who didn't track these last year, here's an explanation; I will be saying my thoughts on the contestants and their performances. In response I received a congressional award for community service. I've always been really proud of that. I was diagnosed with Asperger's (a form of Autism) around the age of 6, but I was not informed of my diagnosis until I was 12. First Day Of 2024/2025 Awards Race

It is about that time of year again where Hollywood gives out its most prestigious awards to most of the time the least deserving. But that doesn't mean I'm not gonna pay attention like always. But this year we will be shaking things up a little. Allow me to explain; Here's How This Works: Each year, I will have a target subject I'm rooting for this season. When the nominations for each award show are announced, I will do a small commentary on whether or not the subject has a chance of winning. However, this year instead of focusing on just the target, I will also be focusing on those I think are frontrunners in different categories for the season as a whole, whether I'm rooting for them or not.  I will most likely say a last minute thought the day before the award show. I will be tracking down all the way up to the big dogs: THE OSCARS. The Awards: We will be focusing on 5 awards; -The Golden Globes -The BAFTA's -The Critics Choice -The SAG Awards and Of Cour...
