This is a list of some of the nastiest and most iconic stepmothers in movies. Both live action and animated characters will be considered for this list.
#10: Emily- Cinderfella
There isn't really that much to Emily as she is basically the typical evil stepmother. The only difference is she's in a family of boys instead of girls. In addition to her cruelty, her late husband and Fella's father had left money behind for his child and she along with her stepsons had been trying to get their hands on it before Fella did. It appears to me that she was more focused on getting the money to hurt Fella than actually keeping her and her family on top, because she immediately told her sons to give back the money when Fella confessed that he cared more about having a family than the actual money. She seemed annoyed that he had no negative reaction to her finding his father's money. So not only is Emily wicked, she's also very immature. There are actually quite a few characters like that on this list.
Now we move on to the "Snow White" story for our next pick. Like the typical story, Clementianna has it out for Snow White. In addition to that, she's responsible for the disappearance of her husband and Snow White's father as she turned him into a dragon. She's also kind of a predator as she had been pining after Prince Alcott throughout the movie. While this was mostly for his money, I'm still counting it as predatory. It should be no surprise that she was Jealous with a capital J when Snow became close with him. She went through great lengths to both get rid of her and marry the prince, including feeding her to a beast and drugging him. This version of Snow White seems to be smarter than most as Clementianna's final attempt at defeating Snow (the iconic poison apple) fails as Snow gives her a slice of the apple. Good for you Snow.
Behold, my introduction to Jennifer Coolidge. After Sam's father Hal is killed during the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Fiona inherits everything he owns, including his diner and Sam, whom she treats like dirt in favor of her 2 idiot daughters, Brianna and Gabriella. It also doesn't help that she literally does everything she can to bring Sam down and keep her as her slave. This includes not letting her go to the dance, hiding her acceptance letter to Princeton, and hiding the will that Hal left behind, which states that everything he owns now belongs to Sam. She basically had it out for Sam for no good reason at all. The woman is also very delusional about her looks. No offense to Coolidge, but she looks like Miss Piggy. And she only made her face worse with those Botox. Seriously, that was too much.
Beverly might be the most disgusting character on this list. She's also one of 2 entries not "Cinderella" or "Snow White" related. She serves as the stepmother to Tommy and biological mother to Paul, though she appears to show a little too much love for Paul. Upon the 2 being witnessed kissing, it is revealed that she and Paul are actually married and con artists with sinister motives involving the estate of Tommy's late father. However, her marriage to Tommy's father is declared not legal due to Paul and she has the right to nothing. I know they weren't actual mother and son, but I can't help but squirm at these 2. They could have hired someone to play her stepson, but they had the bright idea of having Paul play her son. That's just sick on so many levels.
Narissa is basically a combination of fellow Disney villains Maleficent and the Evil Queen (who may or may not be on this list). She is instantly jealous of Giselle when her step son Edward falls for her immediately. So she sends her to a place where there are "no happy endings”, in other words, New York (sometimes she’s not wrong). The weird thing about Narissa is that even when it was shown that Giselle had fallen for Robert by the time she was found, she still wanted to kill her. She could've just left it at that, but instead throws a hissy fit in the form of turning into a dragon and nearly killing Robert. The girl don't like your stepson anymore, what is the problem?! Then again, I should also consider that she probably would've killed Nancy if she wanted to as well. But either way, just leave them alone.
Eun-joo was a nasty chick (sort of), and I'm pretty sure she was responsible for the mental deterioration of one of the titular characters. First she has an after with her future husband while his then wife is ill. This drives the wife to commit suicide and Su-yeon, one of her daughters, is killed in an attempt to revive her mother. While Eun-joo did attempt to revive Su-yeon, she then refuses when her sister Su-mi calls her out for her actions and lets her die. This caused Su-mi to develop a split personality as well as suffer hallucinations that involved her stepmom doing horrible things. It also doesn't help that she's being haunted by her dead sister. While most of Eun-joo's actions were just in Su-mi's head, she did still let the kid die and married her father after causing his wife's suicide. There's no excuse for that.
I have a special dislike for this woman and her piece of trash she calls a daughter. Pretty much all the stepmothers on this list have done some horrible things to their step kids, but the things the Baroness did to Danielle were just ridiculous. Taking over her father's house and reducing her to a servant is one thing. But having her whipped, humiliating her in front of Henry and selling her to a pervert is a whole other level of cruel. Marguerite was also a pain to watch, and I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that I was satisfied when Danielle punched her in the face. Though I know they’re evil, normally I don’t get super irritated with stepmothers when watching them In movies. But this one (along with another certain character on this list) really pushed my buttons. Screw You Baroness, SCREW YOU!
Ravenna is pretty much the typical Evil Queen. She wants to stay young and beautiful, hates Snow White, etc. However, her hate towards Snow seems to be more aimed towards the fact that she’s destined to destroy her. I find this ironic considering that this is a case where the Evil Queen is way prettier than Snow White (which is ironic considering I despise Charlize Theron, not too fond of Kristen Stewart either). But honestly there’s not really much to this version of the Evil Queen. I will give the movie props for taking a more girl-power twist on Snow White, but it’s hard to care when she’s portrayed by a pre-”Spencer” Kristen Stewart. But I wouldn’t say they really added anything new to the Evil Queen. That’s not really a bad thing considering she’s on the list, there’s just not really much to say about her.
May I present the Disney baddie that started it all. Queen Grimhilde has one goal in life, and that is to be the fairest in the land. So when her 14-year old stepdaughter steals her spotlight, she is PISSED. She’s even more pissed when her huntsman fails to kill Snow White, so she does the deed herself in the form of an old hag and a poison apple. Obviously Grimhilde is the typical Evil Queen as well, but what puts her above Ravenna is that she set the standards for Ravenna as well as other Evil Queen characters. Grimhilde also received an alternate version of herself through the ABC series “Once Upon A Time” in the form of Regina Mills (yes, I consider them the same character). She may not be the fairest in the land but she is the one who started it all, and no one (not even Snow White) can take that away from her.
Did y'all expect anything else? Of course Lady Tremaine takes the top spot. Obviously, Tremaine hates her step daughter for her youth and beauty. And though she does not try to kill Cinderella, she still made it very clear how little she cared for her and has no consideration for what happens to her. She probably would have hired someone to kill Cinderella if she could just to keep her hands from getting dirty. The 2015 version also pushed my buttons along with the Baroness. Her pure joy at making Cinderella’s life miserable made me and my grandma refer to her as a certain word that I prefer not to say on this blog. There is no denying that Tremaine is probably the first thing anyone thinks of when the term “Evil Stepmother” comes to mind. She was truly a piece of trash woman and an obvious shoe-in for my #1.
