As a mother’s day present to my mom, this is a lists of the most notable mothers in animated movies. They have to be actual mothers, not legal guardians or mother figures. So you won’t see characters like Nani from “Lilo & Stitch” or Cass from “Big Hero 6”. Villainous mothers will also be excluded, meaning Mother Gothel and Lady Tremaine are also out.
#9: Annie Hughes- The Iron Giant
Annie is the single widowed mother to Hogarth who works as a waitress. Being widowed at a young age and raising a son on your own after such a tragedy is hard enough by itself. But imagine adding a giant alien robot to the picture. Other than the robot, she’s a typical mom trying her best to provide for her little family. The robot may have been a huge stretch, but at the end of the day, she was still there for her kid (particularly during the giant’s sacrifice). The movie ends with her dating Dean and things kind of going back to normal. To be honest, I don’t really have much to say about Annie and I’m not really sure if there is much to say about Annie. This is pretty much the reason for her placement on this list. It doesn’t mean she’s a bad character, It just means there’s a lot more memorable characters on this list.
Poor Mrs. Potts was under the misfortune of working for a spoiled pathetic prince all while raising a child. To make things even worse, she and her son Chip are cursed along with the prince (now known as the Beast) and turned into a tea set. Mrs. Potts is shown to be loving but stern with Chip. Her motherly nature also extends to others as well, particularly Belle (whom she was very nurturing towards during her stay) and the Beast (whom she lambasted for his lack of control over his temperament and manners with the help of Lumiere). So Mrs. Potts is pretty much the mom of the staff as well and somewhat of a voice of reason. Chip is very lucky to have her as a mom. Plus she gets extra points for being voiced by Angela Lansbury.
#7: Ming Lee- Turning Red
The most recent character of the bunch, I think it’s safe to say that Ming is the most psychotic character as well. It’s good that she’s trying to protect her daughter, but sometimes she can go a little overboard. It takes a special kind of parent to go through so much trouble to get pads to their daughter (favorite part of the movie). Ming is so over the top that she could possibly give Freddie’s mom from “iCarly” a run for her money, and we all know how crazy she is. But with all that being said, everything she does for Mei is because she loves her. She just has a tendency to go a little over the edge. And she does loosen up by the end of the movie. Ming might’ve gone through the most growth out of all the characters on this list.
Kala might be the most tragic character on this list as It is to my understanding that she is the only one here who has lost a child. The only good thing that came out of the loss was that she gained a new child through Tarzan (whose parents were killed by the same sabor that killed Kala’s cub). She stood by Tarzan till the very end, even when her fellow gorillas as well as her own husband didn’t approve of him. And when she knew it was time to tell him the truth about who he is, she was willing to let him go back to his own kind despite the fact that she might not ever see him again. Seriously, that scene of her and Tarzan’s goodbye was extremely heartbreaking. There is no denying that Kala was a real MVP.
The relationship between Elinor and Merida was literally the definition of dysfunctional. With Elinor constantly trying to mold her into the daughter and queen she wants her to be, there is almost never a moment of peace between the 2. It took Elinor turning into a bear for them to finally put their differences aside and understand each other. Elinor has her moments, but (just like Ming Lee) everything she does is out of love. Merida eventually realizes that through this journey. Elinor is also shown to have quite the mama bear (no pun intended) side as well. She was able to put up a good fight against Mor’du when he was on the brink of killing Merida. So, yeah whatever you do, do not mess with Elinor’s babies.
#3: Valka- HTTYD
So we, Hiccup, and Stoick were under the impression that Valka here was eaten by a dragon (which did not help with Stoick's hatred towards dragons). So when I saw her reveal for the trailer of "HTTYD 2", I was just as shocked as Hiccup. Valka was under the belief that going back home would put Hiccup in danger, so she chose to stay away. You'd think that would sound selfish, but in my opinion that was an understandable choice, There was no way she could've known how exactly things would turn out or that her baby was just like her. And while it still took a little bit for her to come back home (again, understandable), she eventually came around. And her, Stoick, and Hiccup could've been one big happy family if it wasn't for Drago Jerkface. Seriously, SCREW HIM!
#2: Mrs. Brisby- The Secret Of Nimh
For our runner-up, we have yet another mom under the unfortunate circumstance of being a widow. Though this one has it even worse, as she has to raise 4 kids and one of them has fallen ill with pneumonia. So she embarks on an epic journey to save her son. This woman was willing to go through Hell and high-water to save Timothy. Her will to protect her family was so strong that it literally powered an amulet. If that doesn’t show you how dedicated she is to her kids, then I don’t know what will, and that is something to truly admire. Seriously, never underestimate what this woman will do for her child. This also nearly gave her the top spot, but my next pick has some more edge over her. But I won’t deny that Mrs. Brisby deserves respect.
Before the top pick, here are some honorable mentions.....................
Queen Lillian- Shrek
Lucy Tucci- Home
-She's cool, that's it -Doesn't do much but still decent
Kanga- Winnie The Pooh
Mel Jones- Coraline
-Also doesn't do that much, but decent - No not the evil mom, the normal one
Mrs. Jumbo- Dumbo
Littlefoot's Mother- Land Before Time
-DO NOT PISS THIS ELEPHANT OFF! -Rehash of Bambi's mom
#1: Helen Parr/Elasti Girl- The Incredibles
I think we can all agree that Helen Parr is a BOSS, both on the battlefield and in her household. And when you're in a family of superheroes, that's gonna be needed. Raising kids and dealing with a husband suffering from a midlife crisis is complicated enough, but adding superpowers to the bunch is just plain cruel. But Helen does what she can, and she does it with style and awesomeness. What's ironic about Helen taking the top spot is that she's the one on this list with the most similarities to my own mother. Both always know the right time to be stern or loving. They always know what to say to their babies when they need it (cause who else knows you better than your parents, aside from Jesus). I would say the difference is my mom's not a superhero, but I don't know that for sure. Never stop being a BOSS Helen, never stop.
The Google slide link is down below like always. To my mother Mrs. Cora Chadwick, I hope you enjoyed this list. I love you, Happy Mother's Day.
