Do you ever watch a movie or tv series and feel like its writers hate a certain character? That’s me with pretty much all these characters in a nutshell. These are characters that are supposedly no longer active and the last time we saw them, they had a less than happy ending. Tragic characters who did get a happy ending (Example: Zuko from “ATLA”) or who are still active (Example: Barry Allen from “The Flash”, though this is almost no longer accurate) do not qualify.
#10: Eddie Munson- Stranger Things
Eddie is the newest character on this list and It did not take very long for him to become a fan favorite. What makes the character so tragic is that it was obvious that Chrissy's death was very traumatizing for him (and a lot of us), and he is automatically blamed for her death. It was also obvious that (despite probably not knowing her very well) he cared for her very much. Eddie probably deserved a happy ending the most out of all the characters (aside from Max) that season. But instead of giving him the ending that he deserved, he dies sacrificing his life. That was probably one of the most unfair deaths on the series. I know they have a tendency to kill off new characters in their introduction season (again aside from Max). But giving what they put Eddie through, they could've made an exception.
#9: Ben Sanderson- Leaving Las Vegas
This is basically the role that made people take Nick Cage seriously (and won him an Oscar) before he became a meme. Ben Sanderson is a man that lost his job, and his family. So instead of starting over, he decides to commit suicide by drinking himself to death. And what better place to do that than right here in Las Vegas. You'd think meeting Elisabeth Shue's character would give him a reason to live again, but not even that was enough for him to want to live. I think what makes his death even worse is that pretty much anyone watching the movie knew there was no chance of saving him at all. And the little rays of hope were all in vain.
Portrayed by Mickey Rouke, Randy Robinson (AKA: The Ram) is a professional wrestler with a kind-of suckish life. For starters, he has a heart condition, leading him to quit wrestling and taking a crappy job. He also attempts to reconcile with his estranged daughter, but that ultimately backfires. Eventually he returns to the ring, despite the fact that he will most likely die if he continues this. I think at this point, he did not care whether or not he died considering living a normal life was not working out for him. And literally the only people who truly cared for the guy was his fans. If I was in the movie, I would've given the dude the biggest hug. Honestly, I think he needed one.
#6: Mary Margaret "Maggie" Fitzgerald- Million Dollar Baby
I love "Million Dollar Baby", but it is depressing as HELL! Also, Maggie Fitzgerald deserved so much better. This girl was determined to make a name for herself in the world of boxing. And for a while she did, but it was cut short when one of her douchebag opponents broke her neck during a match. It also does not help that her lazy piece of trash of a family hates her for no reason, that is accept when they need money. Frankie Dunn was literally all that she had. She trusted him so much, that she asked him to assist her in committing suicide, which he did not want to do but eventually gives in. I guess she thought she had nothing left to live for. Maggie didn't deserve that.
What did Carrie do for those girls to treat her so horribly? Even the teachers (with the exception of Miss Collins) aren't the greatest to her. It's bad enough that her mother is crazy as HELL. At least Sue tried to right her wrongs to an extent. I'm not gonna say that mass murder is the right call, but I won't deny that Carrie's reaction to the pig's blood prank was understood. But even after that, she still had to deal with her mother, who literally stabbed her in the back, leading Carrie to kill her. She then loses control of her powers and it destroys her house, killing her. What's even sadder is that even in death Carrie can't be at peace as the sign at the site of her house says "Carrie White Burns In Hell". Seriously, give the girl a break.
To be honest, most of the characters in "Les Mis" get a sad ending (I hate this musical for a reason). But if there was one character that really went through the ringer, it's Fantine. Being a prostitute during the French Revolution is one thing. But selling your hair and teeth, that's a whole other level of messed up. There's a reason why "I Dreamed A Dream" is so emotional and depressing, especially the lyric ‘I had a dream that life would be, so different from this Hell i'm living' . The girl finally dies at the end of the movie, and (like Jax) the girl finds peace in death. Also like Jax, I wish it didn't have to be this way. But once again, it is the way it is.
#3: Justin Foley- 13 Reasons Why
I am PISSED OFF at what they did to Justin. Yes the dude was a jerk at first, but the deeper we got into the series, the more we realized that this kid's life was a living HELL! Justin was literally surrounded by bad influences, even his own mother (who was probably his first bad influence). Clay was literally the best thing that ever happened to him. And just when he got his life together in the last season and it seemed like things were gonna work out for him, everything immediately crashed and burned. His past mistakes caught up with him and he developed HIV, which soon turned to AIDS, and he passed away. I know the show is known to be “realistic”, but Justin did not deserve this. He deserved a happy ending and to live the rest of his life. This was probably the most unfair death in the series and on this list.
Wanda might’ve been crazy, but with the Hell she’s been through I’m surprised she didn’t lose it sooner. We are talking about someone who lost her parents, brother, and boyfriend. The girl was so messed up that she was willing to go through great lengths to finally have the family that she’s always wanted, including mass murder and holding people hostage in a hex. There is no excuse for either of those actions, but I was hoping that she would have a huge redemption and a better revolution than what she received in “Multiverse Of Madness”. Yes she sacrificed herself and realized her wrong doings. But she was too late and I was hoping she would work herself up to redemption and still live to be happy. What a ripoff.
Wolverine just could not catch a break, and honestly, I’m not sure if he believed he deserved one. The reason I say that is because he was fine with dying in “Logan”. He’s seen so much and has been through so much as well. I think it’s safe to say that he’s at the point where he’s just done with pretty much everything. I think Laura and Charles gave him at least a little bit of a reason to live, but I’m not sure if that was enough. And it’s not because he doesn’t love them, that’s far from the truth. He’s just seen more than enough Hell to last a lifetime. I know I’m saying this a lot, but at least his death marked the beginning of peace for both him and mutants as a whole. Every single one of these characters have seen better days, but Logan just takes the cake and was probably the one who deserved a happy ending the most.
